QuestMobile: China Frequent Fliers App Usage Report

What mobile phones are the favorites of China frequent fliers? Which cities are their gathering place? Which apps do they often use? All in QuestMobile’s report!

Males Are The Majority

China frequent fliers are mostly males, accounting for more than 80%.

Many Middle-aged People in First and Second Tier Cities

First and second tier cities jointly gather more than 70% of frequent fliers, and people between 31 and 35 years old are definitely the main force. Taken together, people between 31 and 35 in first and second tier cities respectively make up 13.3% and 18.1% of all frequent fliers in China.

Mobile Devices Used by Frequent Fliers

Apple devices are still the first choice of China frequent fliers, as more then 60% of them would choose it, but it is only 25.3% for all China internet users. Being No. 2 brand, HUAWEI devices captured 14.0% of frequent fliers, basically the same as the situation of all internet users.

App Preference of Frequent Fliers

China frequent fliers have special preference for stock trading, car sharing and online travel apps, reflecting their strong demand for investment and travelling. In addition, they are interested in auto maintenance and traffic violation query apps, because most of them have cars.

Frequent Fliers’ Choice of Flight Information Apps

Generally speaking, comprehensive flight information apps have higher penetration rate than various airlines’ apps. Specifically, the penetration rate of Flight Manager and VariFlight reached 21.5% and 13.3% respectively, but it is only 7.2% and 2.8% for China Southern Airlines and China Eastern Airlines’ app.

Gender Structure of Top 4 Airlines’ Apps Users

Majority of China Southern Airlines, Air China and China Eastern Airlines’ apps are males, accounting for more than 80%. Spring Airlines’ app is relatively more attractive to females, as they make up about 30% of its users.

Age Structure of Top 4 Airlines’ Apps Users

Spring Airlines’ app boasts of the youngest users group, as 37.7% of its users are below 24 years old.

Geographical Distribution of Top 4 Airlines’ Apps Users

Users of top 4 airlines’ apps are mainly in first and second tier cities. Specifically, the share of Air China’s app users in first tier cities exceeds 40% which even surpasses 50% for China Eastern Airlines, but there are only 13.8% of mobile internet users in first tier cities on the whole.

Interests and Preferences of Top 4 Airlines’ Apps Users

Users of top 4 airlines’ apps are generally interested in investment. Users of Air China’s app presents high TGI in auto field, probably because lots of them have cars or plan to buy cars.

MAU of Mainstream Flight Information Apps

Generally speaking, comprehensive flight information apps have more users than airlines’ apps. Flight Manager boasts of the largest MAU in the industry, about 4.6 million in Sep. 2017. With about 2 million MAU, China Southern Airlines’ app takes the lead among airlines’ apps.

User Stickiness of Mainstream Flight Information Apps

In terms of user stickiness, Flight Manager is doubtlessly No. 1, and Umetrip, VariFlight, China Eastern Airlines and China Southern Airlines fall into the second tier.
